Smokey Glen Farm Hosts Third Annual ISES Picnic

Males Squeeze Out a Win Over Females in the ISES Battle of the Sexes
By Lori Hill, lori hill event productions, inc.
Washington, DC ISES - President

Even though it had been raining daily leading up to the Annual ISES Picnic held on Father's Day, June 15th, Mother Nature smiled down on us and kept the skies dry.

Smokey Glen Farm in Gaithersburg, MD served as our host and provided not only a delectable barbeque meal with all of the fixings, but country pies, ice cream and a whole lot more. Guests were able to enjoy the scenic country vistas by partaking in a hayride throughout the farm.

Outgoing president Bill Knight, CSEP, acknowledged volunteers who made
huge contributions to the chapter throughout the year. They included Jennie Lehman, Chuck Kahana, Mitch Rotker and Dave Edwards, CSEP. The gavel was then passed from Bill to yours truly, your incoming chapter president and the 2003-2004 board and I then took the oath of office administered by our own Dale Harmon, incoming ISES international treasurer.

Dads who attended the picnic wore a special ribbon acknowledging them on this special day. In addition, gift certificates were awarded to the most recent first time dad and to the father who had been a dad the longest. Congratulations to Mitch Rotker, a first time dad with 3-month old twin daughters who won a night of bowling with his buddies at Strike Bethesda. Larry Glatt, a father for 43 years, was awarded a much-deserved gift certificate to Rock Bottom Brewery.

Since an Olympic competition would not be complete without opening ceremonies, we had our very own (ahem) torch carried by incoming front desk co-director June Ciuba Ring. As she held the torch high atop Mount Olympus (okay, it was a big rock), the crowd clapped and the games began! Males
and females young and old participated in such challenging competitions as the basketball free thewn competition and the very physical (and sometimes painful) capture the balloon competition ... in the moon bounce! Alas, the males prevailed, but only by a few points!

Thank you to our contributors!
