Welcome to Our New President

At the June Meeting, the 2007-2008 ISES DC Board of Directors recited the chapter oath and was sworn into office. Kelley Gillespie of GEM Associates was inducted as President of our chapter. Kelley is a 10+ year member of ISES and previously served as VP of Membership and on the International ISES Membership Committee.

She and the board have ambitious plans for this year. The new chapter website will debut soon with a complete redesign, along with a posting of the full event calendar for the year so members can purchase tickets in advance for the chapter’s increasingly sold-out monthly meetings. ISES is planning to partner with other industry hospitality organizations to bring outside business to members and increase traffic to the website. Long-term ISES members, called Industry Leaders, will be targeted for special networking and education opportunities this year. The November ISES Expo will increase in number of exhibitors and attendees. Look for great changes!

Kelley’s first order of business was to represent DC, along with the Board of Directors, at the Northeast Regional ISES Board Meeting in Atlantic City, NJ. Check out their Independence Day spirit. Welcome, Kelley - here's to a prosperous (and fun) year!

Networking to the Rhythm of the Islands

The July ISES breaker had everyone swaying to an island beat thanks to Bialek's Music.   The Hilton Alexandria Mark Center hosted the evening and bolstered the island theme with barbecue fare, tropical drinks, and cabana style ambiance.  The bright furniture and floral arrangements were compliments of CORT Furniture and Fiore Floral respectively.  Attendees with a sweet tooth found their way over to Smoothie Time's ice cream cart and topped their bowls with chocolate candy and rainbow sprinkles.  Unfortunately, the outdoor tent donated by Sugarplum Tent Company went unused thanks to some not-so-island-like weather.

ISES Throws a Heck of a Cocktail Party!
June's sold-out cocktail party was quite a hit.  The Crystal Gateway Marriott was a fantastic host and served up a delicious spread.  Sonny Ganguly, Chief Marketing Officer for WeddingWire, captivated his audience as he outlined 10 easy ways to break through advertising clutter and reach desired customers. At the end of the night, attendees were stuffed from the cuisine, bubbling with new ideas, and out of business cards - all signs that denote a stellar night!

Guess Who!

During the cocktail portion of the evening, everyone cast their vote for the winner of the 2007 Tabletop Competition. Can you match each design team with the table top they created? And, more importantly, can you guess who won?

ISES Works

How have your ISES connections brought you business or solved a problem?

"Being a member of ISES has helped my career in numerous ways by participating in various conferences and showcases as well as attending local chapter functions.  I've also made a number of significant contacts including meeting Tim Lundy at an awards gala which directly led to my band, Sound Connection, performing last March at an amazing, high-profile wedding at Ringling Museum in Sarasota, FL."
-Andy Kushner, Sound Connection

"Just hours before the start of the Northeast Regional Education Conference I learned that Blair Mansion, our children's show venue for the past 7 years, would close for renovations at the end of June, leaving us 'homeless.'  I bemoaned our fate to Lori Hill and Bill Knight on the bus on the way to the Breaker and they instantly gave me a solution; the brand new comedy club "Riot Ac" on 14th St NW. I called that Monday, and, within days, I had an agreement to move our show to Riot Act for student performances, kids shows and team building events.  NOW THIS! KIDS! debuted at its new location on Saturday, July 14 for an open ended run."
-Carol Nissenson, NOW THIS!

Want to see the show?  ISES members can get "twofers" to the August 11th performance by calling Carol Nissenson at (202) 364-8292.

New Member Spotlight

Tracey Attlee of Tracey Attlee Weddings and Portraits, www.traceyattlee.com, is our newest ISES Photographer Member

Q: Tracey, what's your background?
A:  I am a former New York Times White House photographer who has been photographing weddings professionally for over 20 years.  I have offices in the DC and New York metropolitan areas.

Q: What is the furthest you've traveled to a job?
A: To a wedding in Chartres, France in a 15th century chapel.  After the ceremony, the couple was enveloped by the crowd outside the chapel and presented with a surprise gift basket.  When they lifted the lid, out flapped a pair of white doves that charmingly cuddled together on the chapel roof. I began photographing the doves, but quickly turned my lens to the horse drawn bridal carriage that arrived to carry the couple to a candlelit chateau for their reception.  The vision of that little antique carriage threading through all those hills with the bride and groom waving was unforgettable.  At night, I stole the couple away for a moment and led them outside to an up-lit whitewashed silo.  They danced for me under the French stars, and I photographed their elongated shadows projecting up the old silo.
