An Institute for Professional Development
By Ray Bialek, Bialek's Music Ltd.
Picture yourself on the beach at Waikiki with Lori
Hill, Dale Harmon, and Dave Edwards in swimsuits and
Bob Blanken sweating buckets. This won't be your experience
unless you join the other 15 event professionals from
the DC ISES chapter August 23 through August 27 at
the Sheraton for the coronation of "King Marty
Janis."
I, Ray Bialek, will personally be your social director
and help you decide classes to take, parties to attend
and how many Mai tai's you can handle in one sitting.
So tell your bosses, grab your spouses or "special
friends" and meet me in Honolulu. We are the largest
chapter in the world and I'd like to see a great turn
out.

President's
Letter
What an exciting time to be a member of ISES. Our local ISES chapter
is the largest in the world with more than 520 members!
The new Board
of Directors just completed our first strategic planning retreat of the
year and we have lots of exciting plans for the coming
year. We are planning quality education, unique monthly events and great
networking opportunities for our members. By keeping up with industry
trends and educational opportunities, we will ensure that our monthly
programs are worth more than the price of admission.
In addition, the ISES Northeast Regional Education Conference is coming
to Washington, DC and will be held at the Renaissance Hotel, March 10
-11, 2007. The REC will have four different educational tracks - CSEP,
Introductory, Advanced, and Business Owners - to appeal to ALL
of our members. This exciting conference draws ISES members from all
over the Northeast region from Hampton Roads, Virginia to New England.
In an effort to reach out beyond our membership, we are planning to
continue our partnerships with the DC Foster Kids and with NACE for activities
such as this year's Race for the Cure and our July breaker.
By creating and communicating opportunities for member involvement, we
will engage you in our organization - and I hope you will find,
as I have, that the time and money you invest in ISES gives you a great
return.
This organization is about you - the special events professionals.
We want to meet and exceed your needs and, in turn, your business. Your
feedback, involvement and participation will help to make this happen.
When you have a complaint, compliment, or great idea, feel free to call
me or email me. I promise I will listen and respond.
We look forward to a great new year and look forward to welcoming you
at the September monthly meeting at LOVE in Washington, DC from 4:00PM -7:00PM
on September 13th.

Barbara
E. Herwood - A Life Fulfilled and Celebrated
Humbly submitted by: Ray Bialek
ISES has lost one of its founders and true pioneers as our
third president Barbara Herwood passed away June 9th. She was
an active member for many years, and served on numerous committees
for ISES and NACE. She traveled the country ten years as a
vocalist and continued her musical career leading her own band
and running Hill Herwood Music with her husband.
On a personal note, Barbara is the one who convinced me to
join the board in 1991 and I've been there ever since. At
times she became frustrated with the younger generation taking
over, but she never lost her sense of humor and enthusiasm.
She loved traveling to ISES conventions and had lots of input
for the new organization.
Barbara's greatest artistic gift was simply herself, and
she will be sorely missed!
Humbly submitted: Alice Conway
Barbara Herwood served on the first education committee of
Washington's ISES chapter and worked tirelessly and selflessly
to promote the goals of ISES. As president, she guided the
chapter during a transition period and graciously worked with
a very outspoken group of board members, again keeping her
focus on ISES goals.
On a personal note, she was a great supporter of me in those
early ISES years, and I am proud to be the recipient of a
booklet of her famous paper dolls. She was an excellent big
band vocalist and performed for me on many occasions with
Hill's band. She loved fashion and had impeccable taste in
clothes, especially shoes and handbags.
Her loyalty, kindness, fashion flair and sense of humor will
be missed.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Barbara's memory
to The Casey House/Montgomery Hospice, 6001 Muncaster Mill
Road, Rockville, Maryland 20850.
2007 Northeast
REC Location Selected
By Renee Stake
Troutman
Sanders and 2007 REC Co-Chair
As you already know, The Greater Washington Chapter of ISES
will be hosting the Northeast REC in 2007 and we are even more
excited now that a location has been
selected!
We are proud to announce that the
REC will be held at the Renaissance Washington, DC Hotel,
located in heart of downtown
DC, on March 10-11, 2007. The hotel is one the city's premier
properties and offers over 800 guest rooms and an amazing swim & fitness
facility with a 60-foot indoor heated pool (perfect for the
weather of early March). "We're all very excited to host
the REC", says Heidi Coblentz, long-time ISES member
and Senior Catering Sales Manager at the hotel. "We are
delighted that you have selected our property."
The REC will provide an excellent opportunity for our chapter
to attend fabulous educational sessions, interesting leadership
meetings and the chance to network with other ISES members
from all over the region without the hassle and expense of
traveling. Activities for the weekend include regional leadership
meetings, four tracks of education sessions, a Saturday night
breaker and an evening tour of our beautiful monuments by moonlight.
We look forward to seeing you there in 2007!

Member Spotlight!
- ISES Job Bank: A Success Story
by: Stephanie Evans, Cast
of Thousands Entertainment
As a member for nearly five years, Renee Stake is an example
of how being an active member of ISES can jump-start as well
as grow your career in the events industry, no matter where
you are or where you want to go.
"I started attending ISES functions after less than
a year in the industry and three months later, I was on the
Board", says Stake, an Event Planner for the law firm
Troutman Sanders LLP. "Being active in ISES has allowed
me to meet so many great contacts and has exposed me to aspects
of the industry that I never would have been exposed to without
getting involved." Renee strongly believes that you
will only get out of an organization what you put into it,
and highly recommends serving on a committee, running for
a board position, and attending both regional and international
events in order to reap the maximum benefits of ISES.
Renee began her career
in special events as an assistant with The TCI Companies,
a destination management company
that planned events both locally and nationally. When she
was promoted to Proposal Manager, TCI encouraged her to join
ISES so that she could meet vendors and keep herself informed
of the latest and greatest industry trends. During her four
and a half years with TCI, she served on the ISES Board of
Directors as Secretary (2003-2004) and then Vice President
of Programs (2004-2005). "I feel very lucky to have
worked for a company that was so supportive of my involvement
with ISES and not only stood behind my decision to serve
on the Board, but encouraged it." It was during those
two years that she met fellow Board member Julee Staley,
who hired her for her next position as an Event Designer
at Ridgewells. "I learned a lot at Ridgewells and picked
up so many ideas from being around such innovative trend-setters.
There is always so much creativity going on at Ridgewells
- they're a fun group of people."
Her next career move
came just two months ago from a job posting that she saw
on the DC ISES website for an opportunity
with Troutman Sanders. This position has served as an excellent
growth opportunity for Renee by allowing her to expand her
management and her marketing skills, as she oversees the
events division of the overall marketing department of the
firm. "The ISES Job Bank is a wonderful tool for anyone
looking for a job or just keeping their eyes open for interesting
opportunities" she says. In addition to her new position,
Renee is back on the Board as the 2007 REC co-Chair. "I
couldn't stay away from ISES for too long", she laughs. "Co-chairing
the REC is the next step in my career and as long as I have
the support of my fellow ISES members, I know this will be
the best REC yet!"
If you have a job to post or you are looking for a new job,
check out the ISES Job Bank! You too could be a success story!
