A TALE OF TWO WEDDINGS

Carol Nissenson, Now This!

A couple of months ago I got a call from my 88 year-old Mom who lives in Chicago.

“ Mike and I have decided to get married. Can you help us plan our wedding?” My Mom never had a real wedding the first time around. She and my father were a young poor couple that got married in the rabbi’s study. When he passed away three years ago, she never thought she’d be in love again, let alone a bride, so I wanted to make sure things were special.

I flew to Chicago and met with both of them to find out what they wanted to do. Then I whipped out my laptop and went right to the Chicago ISES chapter website. I called a name I knew from various ISES conferences: Pam Patsavas. By the end of the day, Mom had booked one of the three caterers Pam recommended, Ellen Harte of Tasty Catering.

Mom called me after her first meeting with Ellen, absolutely thrilled. She was taking care of everything, including rentals and servers. While Mom and Mike were initially surprised at what things cost today (Mike actually thought he could do food and drink for $10 a head!), I was very pleased with the price she gave them and called her to tell her so. She said “I hope that when my husband and I are that age, we treat each other with as much respect and kindness.”

Six weeks later, I got a call from my son Josh. He had just proposed to Hagar, his wonderful Israeli girlfriend of four years. Two days later, they both called to ask if I thought it would be possible to get a wedding together by late August, before Hagar had to start teaching a masters program. They wanted to be married in New Jersey, where they live. Hagar’s parents live in North Carolina and would be the first to admit they had no clue as to how to put together an American wedding.

ISES to the rescue again! I emailed Joan Rothbard, President of New Jersey North and she referred me to an ISES member who had just done her own wedding in New Jersey and had tons of resources. I contacted Dennis Remsberg here and he referred me to a tenting company that served New Brunswick. I found a planner, Dori Pomerantz-Saypol who could help them with onsite coordination. And, though I am certainly no planner, my involvement with so many ISES events helped me to prepare a checklist for the bride and groom, so nothing would be overlooked.

So this summer, I will be the daughter of the Bride and the mother of the Groom and a very grateful ISES member.

President's Letter

Reflections for the Future

I can’t believe that it has been a year since I took the Presidential oath for our chapter. It has been a wonderful year, and our board has done a fabulous job in reaching our goals.

Our membership numbers are off the chart! Never before has an ISES chapter had over 500 members…and we’re not done yet. More of our members have been involved in committees than ever before. And we have had the highest number of sold out events this year.

While the board throughout the year tracked all of these goals, you define the true measurement of our success!

As an ISES DC member:

    • Did you volunteer for any of our events?

    • Did you join a committee?

    • Did you go to the monthly meetings?

    • Are you going to renew your membership?

If you answered yes to any of the above, then you added to the success of the chapter. You also showed us that you approved of the changes made this year.

My thanks to you, the ISES DC membership, for making this year our most successful yet. To the Board of Directors, congratulations in reaching your goals and making this the best ISES chapter ever. Finally, thank you to the Advisory Board for your support and historical perspective throughout the year.

To the new Board, my best wishes to you. I hope that this momentum carries on and that you enjoy next year even more than I enjoyed this year.

Thank you to everyone for making this year very special.

Raegan Smythe
ISES DC President

Making the Most of your ISES Membership:
Just Add Water and Stir

By Jenna Lordo

If only getting the most out of your ISES membership were as easy as baking a cake. Or as predictable.

When asked to write an article on the benefits of ISES membership, I quickly agreed to such an easy task. I regularly tout the benefits to the sponsors of our monthly events: “We are the world’s largest chapter. . . Showcase your talent to key decision-makers. . . Expand your network. . . Immortalize your [product/ service] on the event photo page of the ISES DC website . . .” On one hand, I feared running out of ink before finishing my illustrious list. On the other hand, I feared I had nothing new to say.

Two recent articles by Lori Hill of lori hill productions covered the topic eloquently and in great detail. In talking with other members, Pat Richitt of Entertainment Exchange summed things up for new members, “ISES is mostly comprised of business people and predominantly entrepreneurs. Because most such businesses do not have a staff of salespeople, the business owner is required to go out in the world and make contacts.” Pat also provided a neat ‘n tidy laundry list of benefits:

  1. Business referrals
  2. Being known as an expert
  3. Developing your own personal capital
  4. Professional development
  5. Knowing your competition and getting to know your competitors
  6. Enjoying on a personal level the professionals you work with at events

Since the benefits of ISES have already been covered extensively, my mind started to drift toward member experiences that do not mirror the perfect Betty Crocker triple layer chocolate cake. As VP of Programs, I am often in the sounding board for viewpoints on a wide range of member concerns, expectations, and, sometimes, outright misconceptions. Various conversations I have had over the years began to emerge like a large, colorful collage.

As membership has recently topped the 500 mark, it is time to tap into the collective wisdom of our members to build upon our successes, acknowledge our imperfections and craft a vision of the future. Our June meeting will provide just such an opportunity. The festivities will include an open Town Hall meeting that will give our members a chance to exchange views and discuss topical issues as our Chapter continues to expand and evolve. The forum will be very informal, but to assist in our planning efforts, I invite you to email topics of interest, comments and concerns to: j.lordo@verizon.net. Please use “Forum” as the subject heading.

DC CHAPTER TO HOST 2007 ISES NORTHEAST REC
By Renee Stake
Troutman Sanders

ISES DC is proud to announce that we have officially been selected as the host chapter for the 2007 ISES Northeast Regional Education Conference (REC). If you have never attended a REC, this is your opportunity to attend one in your own backyard!

What is the REC?
The 2007 ISES Northeast REC is an opportunity for the region's event professionals to sharpen their skills, learn the hottest trends from industry experts and share their knowledge with others. The 2007 REC will feature tracks for ISES members at all skill levels through unique educational tracks. And you know it wouldn't be an ISES event without a few elements of fun. There will be plenty of opportunity to network with fellow attendees from New York, Philadelphia, New Jersey, Providence, New England, and Hampton Roads.

Why attend?
You'll experience exciting educational seminars without travel expenses paired with terrific networking opportunities with those from our neighboring chapters. Meeting planners and vendors from all over the Northeast region can open many doors for your business.

When and where will the REC be held?
The 2007 REC Planning Committee is still working to finalize the exact date and location but we can tell you that it will be held in late February or early March. More details to come in the next ISES DC newsletter.

What are the benefits to the members of the ISES DC chapter?
Hosting the 2007 ISES Northeast REC is a great way to showcase the very best that our members have to offer to both local and regional ISES members. The REC will provide the chance for all ISES members to promote their businesses in various ways such as sponsorship, program advertising, product contribution or volunteering to assist with conference activities.

Who should attend?
The 2007 REC will offer something for everyone from seasoned professional to student members so all ISES DC members are encouraged to attend and get involved!

How can I get involved?
The REC 2007 planning committee has already started making plans and we would love to have you join our committee. If you would like to volunteer, please contact the 2007 REC Co-Chairs,

Member Spotlight! - 2006 Rising Star Award

By Jennifer Bristow
USA Hosts, Ltd.

If you attended the 11th Annual Capital Awards Gala, Classical Overtures: Celebrating the Arts…Celebrating You, you may have noticed that Monica Murano received the 2006 Rising Star Award. Monica is a sales manager at the Hilton Washington Embassy Row and became an ISES DC member in 2004. Upon registering as a member, she decided to volunteer. Her very first event was also her first volunteer experience on the Silent Auction committee. From that moment on, Monica has served for two years on the Silent Auction Committee as well as assisted with the 2005 Capital Awards Gala.

The RISING STAR AWARD is presented on behalf of the Board of Directors acting on the advice of the committee chairs, and honors a new volunteer for his/her outstanding service as a committee member, or volunteer. This award honors an outstanding member who shows much promise in leadership and industry professionalism.

Raegan Smythe, ISES DC President, shared these words while presenting the award; “I have had the pleasure of personally working with her on the Silent Auction last year. And I witnessed her leadership abilities at this year's very successful Auction in December. We have watched her grow from being just a committee member to stepping up into a leadership role. We are looking forward to many more years of working with this individual. And I think the chapter would be well served to one day see her in our board meetings.”

Congratulations to Ms. Monica Murano for her outstanding contributions to the ISES DC Chapter!
