President's
Letter
September’s meeting at LOVE was a great way to start the new ISES
season. What a fabulous venue – the décor, the food, the
speaker – all came together to make a very special event. We have
many more terrific programs planned for the year showcasing unique venue
spaces, cutting edge education, and new event ideas. Upcoming events
can be viewed on the Web Site at www.dcises.org.
This year’s EXPO
will be held at the University of Maryland on November 15th. The Silent
auction, traditionally held in December, will
now be part of the EXPO. Come out to see new and interesting products
from ISES vendors and help support the DC Foster Kids at the silent auction.
Our
annual Capital Awards Gala will be held on March 27, 2007 at Woodmont
Country Club in Rockville, MD. Award entries are due by February 12th.
Entering your event for the Capitol Awards is a great opportunity to
show off what you and your company can do!
The ISES Northeast Regional Education Conference is coming to Washington,
DC. Sessions will be held on March 11th at the Renaissance Hotel, Washington
DC. For more information, please visit www.isesrec2007.com.
How do you
get the most out of your ISES membership? Joining a committee and volunteering
for events is a great way to meet other ISES members,
gain experience, get new ideas and make contacts in the industry. The
EXPO, Gala and Silent auction are all events that need you. If you are
interested in volunteering please visit our Web Site at www.dcises.org and complete the committee sign-up sheet. Remember – you get out
of ISES what you put into it.
On behalf of the ISES DC Board of Directors
and Committee Chairs, thank you, in advance, for your consideration.
We look forward to your participation.
Congratulations to our Chapter’s
two ISES Esprit Award nominees. Justine Ungaro, Studio Diana, won in
the Photography category (for the
2nd year in a row) and Patti Weiner, Plan-it Parties, won for Social
Event Planner – Budget under $50K. As a chapter, the Greater Washington
DC Chapter won the ISES Spirit of Excellence Award for Programming and
Education! Congratulations to everyone involved.

Eventworld:
A New Member’s Perspective
By Michael Jasser, Marc Park Valet
Eventworld Scholarship Recipient
As a new member to the ISES family, I have
had the opportunity to attend events ranging from Breakers
to Gala's to now Eventworld, held in beautiful Hawaii. ISES
has truly propelled my career both personally and professionally
as I have made countless contacts that I can call more than
business associates, but friends.
Eventworld 2006 attendees
had the opportunity to attend hands-on breakout sessions
with tremendously insightful speakers who provided practical
ideas
you could take home and put into action immediately. Breakout
sessions ranged from Really Cool Event Themes (hosted by
our own Dave Edwards) to Trends in Leadership to Bringing Innovation
to your Corporate Culture. Attendees were provided benefits
that gave them the extra edge needed to go beyond expectations
and increase their networking exposure - all while having
the
time of their lives!
I have already saved the date for Eventworld
2007 held in Montreal as I am looking forward to continuing
to sharpen my skills as a special event professional through
hands-on training given by well-known industry speakers,
as well as renewing friendships with fellow professionals
from all over the world.

Ray’s Hawaiian Adventure ~ Lessons Learned
from Paradise
By Ray Bialek,
Bialek's Music Ltd.
Eventworld Scholarship Recipient
After
10 1/2 hours of flying, four hours of waiting, and 45 minutes
in a cab to the hotel, I arrived at the Sheraton Waikiki. It
was time for check in, Mai Tai, pool, dinner, and sleep, so
I could make the 7:00 am membership roundtable. After three
cups of coffee, the best ideas consisted of:
A. Construct a new member manual for your
chapter
B. Start a frequent member attendee program to reward chapter support
C. Bring a buddy for a buck membership drive
D. New ISES partner - 15% off on Budget Rent-A-Truck
My education started after some much needed
pool and nap time with Dale Harmon and Karen Bridges teaching "Learning
to say no" to a piece of business. Best ideas I took away
from the session:
A. Time is money; so don't give either
away-know your costs
B. Turn down Charitable Organizations and event planners if:
- Everyone but you is getting paid
- The client has never given you a paying
job
- The cost will outweigh the compensation
- Charge a PITA fee (Pain in the ***)
Next, newly inducted ISES President Marty
Janis led "Trends in Ethics". Key ideas were:
A. Don't seek revenge on an employee that
leaves and tries to take business,
B. Keep your company's reputation spotless
I also attended Mary Tribble's "When
to Jump Off the Cliff" discussion, which centered on expansion
vs. contentment. I learned that you need to weigh:
A. Frustration versus Fulfillment
B. Work On the Business or In the Business.
C. Have an end game for your legacy,
I took several more classes including Michael
Cerbelli's "Hot Event and Entertainment Ideas" which
blitzed you with 31 great ideas in 45 minutes.
Besides terrific speakers, the luau, beach, gala, and meeting some new friends
makes attending ISES Eventworld " A Must".
See you in Montreal next August and thank you, ISES, for a memorable experience.

An Unusual Event with an
Important Lesson
Noah Steurer, Gala Design and Production
A
few weeks ago, our company was approached to do an installation
of a unique nature. It would be a simple job, just two runs
of off-white drape, but it would be a job that would make a
big impact on me both as an event designer and as a person.
The client contacted us to
cover two damaged walls in her home for an upcoming event.
She proceeded to tell me that the “event” was to
be a “shiva,” a Jewish tradition in which family
and friends get together to pay their respects after a death.
The shiva was to take place in the client’s home, and
she wanted to make sure that her home would be presentable,
if even she herself was not after the death of her mother.
Naturally, I assumed that the
client had already lost her mother and based on that assumption,
I figured that time was of the essence. Thus, I asked the client
what I typically ask when beginning to plan an event: “when
will this take place?” However, I soon found out that
I had misinterpreted the circumstances surrounding the job.
After a brief pause, she responded, “Do you mean, when
is my mother going to . . .?” She couldn’t bring
herself to complete the sentence. It was then that I realized
that her mother had not yet passed away, and that this job
would be different than any others I had experienced in the
past.
What I assumed would be a rather
simple job, a mere run of drape, turned into a real opportunity
and learning experience for me. I realized that I was being
commissioned to help my client and her family feel more comfortable
and respectable at a very painful time in their lives. I realized
the importance of considering each event as valuable and with
the same high regard the client undoubtedly does, a goal that
our company strives to uphold with every job we take on. “Special
Events” is our business, and although this was just a
simple run of drape, it was an important run of drape to the
client. It was during that moment, as I attempted to extricate
my size twelve from my mouth, that I learned that each and
every event has meaning and significance, no matter the size
or cost.
By divine grace, we have not
yet installed the runs of drape in the client’s home.
The doctors’ time estimates have long since passed. We
remain on call, which is different for our deadline-oriented
mode of business, but it is an exception that we are happy
and willing to make in this special case. Our goal as event
producers has always been and continues to be to exceed our
clients’ expectations in every event that we produce.
This incident demonstrates a time when my expectations were
exceeded as an event designer, as this was a time when I came
to realize that each event truly is a “special” event.
